Commonly Asked PYQs for Neural Tube Defects | NEET PG, INI-CET & FMGE With Dr. Anand Bhatia

Hello everyone, welcome to Pediatrics by Dr. Anand Bhatia. Such a beautiful day today! First of all, thank you so much for all the love and support. All the videos are doing so well, and I’m thrilled to see how much you’re loving them.

Today’s topic of discussion is a very important and beautiful one:

Neural Tube Defects

We’ll quickly cover the last three years’ PYQs from this topic.

  1. Mode of Inheritance

One frequently asked question is:

“What is the mode of inheritance of neural tube defects? Is it autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive?”

Please remember — neural tube defects have multifactorial inheritance. This was asked in FMGE PYQs.

  1. Best and Worst Prognosis

Another important question:

  • Neural tube defect with the best prognosis: Spina bifida occulta
  • Neural tube defect with the worst prognosis: Craniorequischisis

I’ll repeat it — spina bifida occulta has the best prognosis, while craniorequischisis has the worst.

  1. Maternal Drug & Folic Acid Dose

Which maternal drug is associated with neural tube defects?
If the mother hasn’t taken folic acid during pregnancy, the baby can end up with a neural tube defect.

Now, regarding folic acid dosage:

  • Primary prevention (first pregnancy, no history): 400 micrograms/day
  • Secondary prevention (previous child with NTD): 4000 micrograms/day (4 mg/day)

These two doses are extremely important for exam purposes.

  1. Most Common Location

Another PYQ:

“Which is the most common location for a neural tube defect?”

The correct answer: Lumbosacral region.

  1. Sensitive & Specific Markers

Lastly, you should know the markers:

  • Sensitive marker: Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)
  • Specific marker: Acetylcholinesterase

These are very commonly tested in exams.

  1. A Question for You

Here’s a small question for you to think about:

  • If a mother takes erythromycin during pregnancy, the baby can end up with which problem?
  • Also, what is the name of the surgery done for that condition?
Conclusion:

Life is beautiful. Before leaving, remember this — be hopeful. Everything will make sense by the end of your journey. Success belongs to those who enjoy their daily routine.
