What If Two Students Obtain the Same Marks in NEET PG? Must Read

As you prepare for NEET PG 2025, a question that students often ask while preparing for NEET PG is—what if two students obtain the same Marks? With lakhs of NEET PG exam aspirants, the competition is very tough and sometimes even the scores may turn out to be the same. So, how does the NBE (National Board of Examinations) determine whom to rank higher?

Let us analyse the NEET PG tie-breaker rules and what you must be aware of while preparing for NEET PG 2025.

Tie-Breaking Rules in NEET PG

If two or more students achieve identical marks out of 800 in the NEET PG exam, their position in the merit is determined by the following tie-breaker rules, given in the sequence below:

1. Number of Correct Responses

The candidate having the highest number of correct answers in the exam gets the first priority. Accuracy is the mantra!

NEET PG preparation tip: Practice understanding concepts thoroughly so that your accuracy increases along with your speed.

2. Least Number of Negative Responses

If the number of correct answers is identical, then the candidate who has given a lower number of negative responses (wrong answers) is ranked higher. This praises cautious answering and reduces guesswork.

NEET PG preparation tip: Do not guess blindly. Apply smart elimination strategies.

3. Age of the Candidate

If both of the above conditions remain unchanged, then the candidate who is older (according to the date of birth) is preferred in the ranking.

You can’t control your age, but you can control your preparation.

4. Greater MBBS Aggregate Marks

Used as a deciding point if all other points are equal. If all the above still do not resolve the tie, the candidate with the greater aggregate marks in their MBBS program ranks higher.

It does happen, though, and indicates that your school performance throughout medical school still matters.

Final Thoughts

Dear students, remember, the tie-breaker might look like a small thing, but it if you deeply understand it show you a larger principle of NEET PG exam prep—it’s not just about what you know, but how accurately and consistently you apply it. As you study for NEET PG 2025, shoot for high marks, yes, but also clean, accurate attempts.
