Dear FMG students, we all know that only four months remain for the FMG exam.
The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is an important milestone for all foreign-trained doctors who want to practice in India. To crack the FMGE, knowledge is not enough; you need strategy, discipline, and the right mindset.
Important dos and don’ts for FMGE exam
Dos for FMGE Preparation
1. Familiarise yourself with the FMGE Exam Pattern
- Before starting your exam preparation, teach in yourself with the FMGE syllabus, marking pattern, with how you going to cover it, and question breakdown.
- Knowing the pattern very well enables you to focus on important topics and manage your time effectively during the exam.
2. Adhere to a Systematic Study Plan
- Develop a practical schedule for all 19 subjects.
- Concentrate on high-yield subjects such as Pharmacology, Medicine, Microbiology, and Pathology, while leaving sufficient time for revision and mock tests.

3. Revise Regularly
- Regular revision is unavoidable.
- Employ short notes, flashcards, and mind maps for retaining key facts. Plan a minimum of two full revisions before the exam date.
4. Practice Previous Year Questions (PYQs)
- PYQs are gold to FMGE candidates.
- Practicing them enhances speed, accuracy, and confidence. Emphasise learning why every answer is right or wrong.
5. Take Grand Tests (GTs)
- You should practice for the actual exam by sitting for routine Grand Tests.
- The mock tests increase time management skills and help to identify the relevant areas for improvement.
6. Remain Healthy
- Physical and mental health directly affect performance.
- Consume a balanced diet, sleep well, and include short breaks in your daily routine.
Don’ts for FMGE Preparation
1. Don’t Skip Basic Subjects
- While it’s easy to concentrate solely on clinical topics, the FMGE gives major weightage to foundational sciences such as Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry.
2. Don’t Do Last-Minute Cramming
- Cramming can lead to confusion and tension. Stick to your revision schedule and have faith in your preparation.
3. Don’t Neglect Negative Marking Strategy
- Although FMGE does not have negative marking in exams, you must be aware that random guessing will lead to wasting your valuable time. So be very careful while responding, only when you are very fairly sure about it.

4. Refrain From Comparing Your Preparation
- Each aspirant’s experience differs. Do not subject yourself to unnecessary anxiety by comparing with colleagues.
5. Avoid Overburdening Yourself with Resources
Excessive books and notes can confuse you. Select one reliable source in each subject and stick to it.
